All website information, terms, conditions, and design sprint regulations (including but not limited to those related to evaluation of project proposals, selection of finalists, and other services and support for competition participants) are subject to change or revision by the Innovate4Health organizing team at any time.

INNOVATE4HEALTH PARTICIPANT TERMS & CONDITIONS (INCLUDING CODE OF CONDUCT)

ReAct – Action on Antibiotic Resistance and Johns Hopkins University through the IDEA (Innovation + Design Enabling Access) Initiative of the Bloomberg School of Public Health and the International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA) (“Hosting Organizations”) are pleased to host the Innovate4Health (“Design Sprint”). The Design Sprint  is governed by this Participation Agreement (“Agreement”). By entering the Design Sprint, you (“Participant”) agree to abide by the Agreement, which is a binding legal agreement between Participant and the Hosting Organizations with respect to the Design Sprint. Participation in the Design Sprint is subject to and constitutes Participant’s full and unconditional agreement to and acceptance of these terms and conditions. Hosting Organizations reserve the right to disqualify any Participant(s) who, in Hosting Organizations’ sole discretion, fail to comply with the terms and conditions of this Agreement.  

ELIGIBILITY 

Participants must be current students, be at least 18 years of age, and meet the eligibility criteria outlined below to participate.

U.S. export control and/or economic sanctions program regulations may forbid competition organizers to include certain applicants, who are in or from certain countries, in some or all aspects of the competition.  For a listing of countries currently subject to U.S. economic sanctions, please use the following link here

Specific eligibility by education level, as of September 19, 2022, is as follows: 

High school students: No  

Undergraduates: Yes 

Alumni: No 

Graduate, PhD, and Medical Students: Yes 

Graduate, PhD, and Medical Students alumni: No 

Post-doctoral students: No 

Community members: No 

Residents & Fellows: No

Previous Participant in Innovate4Health or Innovate4AMR: No

Participants must be current students, be at least 18 years of age, and meet the eligibility criteria outlined on www.innovate4health.org/terms to participate.

In addition, students working in direct association with the competition organizers, technical review panel members, expert judges, and finalist judges, are ineligible. 

Finally, participants who meet the above eligibility criteria may not apply with more than one team in a given year. Entries with multiple teams may result in all applications being disqualified.

OWNERSHIP OF DESIGN SPRINT IDEAS 

Participants represent and warrant that they have permission to use any proprietary data included in their application and work product generated in the Design Sprint and that it does not infringe on the intellectual property or proprietary rights of any third party, including, without limitation, patents, copyrights, or trademarks. All submitted information is deemed the property of the participating teams and any licensors that it has. However, in participating in this Design Sprint, participants are agreeing to ensure that their proposed solutions and their relevant intellectual property will be open-source and/or open-access so that no person and/or entity is barred from utilizing participants’ proposed solutions. Innovate4Health organizers furthermore reserve the right to upload or not upload submissions to be available in an open-access format, with proper attribution as feasible. By entering the Design Sprint, all participants grant Innovate4Health organizers, Hosting Organizations (those listed on the “About Us'' webpage, as well as their respective sponsors and affiliates), and supporting organizations (those sponsoring, aiding or funding any part of this Design Sprint) a perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, transferable, royalty-free, and non-exclusive license to use, publish, distribute, reproduce, modify, create derivative works from, and publicly display their proposal and its content for any purpose, including without limitation display on the Hosting Organizations’ websites. Our judges and staff do not sign any non-disclosure agreements to participate in the selection of those for this Design Sprint. Any data or information discussed or divulged in the application or participation in the Design Sprint should be considered information that may enter the public realm, and students should not assume any right of confidentiality in any data or information discussed, divulged or presented in the Design Sprint. There will be no recourse in judging when a question or issue is not fully addressed because of concerns over confidentiality.

AWARDS 

Host Organizations’ ability to grant awards may be limited by U.S. export control and/or economic sanctions program regulations.

As a condition of receiving an award, winners may be required to sign a separate agreement releasing, indemnifying, and holding Hosting Organizations harmless from liability with respect to the award. To the extent permitted by law, any and all taxes imposed on awards are the sole responsibility of the winners. 

PUBLICITY AND PRIVACY 

Except where prohibited, by participating in the online competition among all participants, the Participant understands that the Innovate4Health activities may be photographed, videotaped, recorded, etc. and hereby grants Johns Hopkins University, IFMSA and ReAct (and any other hosting or sponsoring organizations) the right to use or refrain from using Participant’s name and/or likeness, any and all footage about the Participant’s participation in the Design Sprint, and the Participant’s Innovate4Health submission in any manner or media that the organizers see fit without the Participant’s review or approval and without compensation. By participating in the Design Sprint, Participants agree that their personal data provided as part of the application and/or Design Sprint may be used by Hosting Organizations for the purposes of the Design Sprint. DISCLAIMER LIABILITY RELEASE AND INDEMNITY 

The Hosting Organizations disclaim any and all liability in connection with, arising out of, or relating in any way to the Participant’s participation in the Design Sprint and/or this Agreement. Participant shall indemnify and hold harmless Hosting Organizations and their respective officers, directors, employees, and successors against any claims, losses, damages, liabilities, and expenses (including reasonable attorney’s fees) arising out of or relating in any way to Participant’s participation in the Design Sprint and/or this Agreement.  

The Hosting Organizations are not responsible for (i) late, lost, damaged, incomplete, or misdirected entries, responses, or other correspondence, whether by email or postal mail or otherwise; (ii) theft, destruction, unauthorized access to  or alterations of entries; or (iii) phone, electrical, network, computer, hardware, software program or transmission malfunctions, failures or difficulties. 

The Hosting Organizations reserve the right, in their sole discretion, to cancel, modify or suspend the Design Sprint, in whole or in part, in the event of fraud, technical or other difficulties outside the reasonable control of Hosting Organizations, or if the integrity of the Design Sprint is compromised, without liability to the Participants. The Hosting Organizations also reserve the right not to select teams nor give out any awards if there are an insufficient number of qualified winning entries.

COVID-19

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, proposals can be conceptual—ability to pilot and implement projects will not influence judging--but teams should clearly indicate how the projects would be implemented in their selected context with a plan to mitigate risks to project participants due to COVID-19. Even if projects could be piloted safely during the Innovate4Health 2022 competition, students will not be expected to pilot their projects. Innovate4Health does not encourage or promote any activities that will increase an individual’s risk or exposure to COVID-19.

CODE OF CONDUCT 

All participants are expected to behave in a professional, civil, and ethical manner, and anyone deemed to have acted in violation of the same may be restricted/removed from the competition by the Host Organizations.

CONFLICT OF INTEREST

For purposes of the Design Sprint, the Participant agrees to not accept any financial or in-kind support from corporate or other partners that could reasonably raise questions about conflict of interest. Partners are categorized into three broad categories: 

  • Unacceptable 

    • Any company that manufactures in pharmaceuticals, or their representatives 

    • Any company that manufactures alcoholic drinks 

    • Any company that manufactures tobacco 

    • Any company that manufactures arms 

    • Any company that extracts or refines fossil fuels 

    • Any company that engages in non-environmentally sustainable praxes 

    • Any company that engages in exploitative labor practices, as defined by the International Labor Organization 

    • Any biotechnology company, or any other party that manufactures medical equipment 

    • Any company or institution that engages in activities determined to be against human rights 

    • Any political or overtly political campaigning organization 

    • Any company, institution or individual that is directly tied to support (financial or otherwise) of parties mentioned in the “Unacceptable”-list, are not acceptable as sponsors of teams participating in the Design Sprint 

  • Conditional 

    • The following areas of commerce that are not listed above but still identified as potentially problematic to provide support are subjected to extra careful evaluation by the Hosting Organizations: 

      • Non-open access 

      • Any company that manufactures sugar sweetened beverages 

      • Fast food organizations 

  • Acceptable 

    • Any organization that is not categorized in the lists above 

    • Any organization whose support is wholly philanthropic
